How to Change Windshield Wipers

Changing your windshield wipers is some of the easiest maintenance you can do on your car. Rather than pay for parts and labor at your local body shop, pick up some windshield wipers at the store, and spend a couple minutes installing them.

The first step is to remove the old wipers. Prop the wiper arms up carefully, and hold the wiper mechanism with one hand. Using the other hand, press the tab on the metal part of the arm where the wiper meets the metal. Slide the rubber wiper down and off the arm. Carefully return the wiperless arm to the down position so that the wiper doesn't snap back and crack or scratch your windshield.

To install the new wipers, lift the wiper arm and hold the new wipers against the metal arm to align the pieces-- this way you'll know which way things are supposed to go when you actually attempt to attach them. Lower the rubber wiper onto the metal arm and snap the wiper into place. You should feel or hear a click. Lower the wiper arm and repeat on the other wiper.

That's it! You have now saved money and time by not taking your car to a body shop for simple maintenance. You've also gained a little confidence at learning a new skill and mastering it.
