How to Save Money on Body Shop Maintenance

Anyone who owns a car knows that a car isn't so much an asset as it is a liability. The older your car gets, the more money you have to put into it to keep it running. If you put in the time and money, however, you can find ways to save on your car maintenance.

Awareness: Your car will need preventative maintenance to stay in tip-top shape. Change your oil every 3,000 - 4,000 miles and replace your timing belt around 100,000 miles. Read your vehicle's owner manual to be aware of when to take your car to the auto body or repair shop for preventative maintenance that will keep other, bigger problems from happening.

DIY: Rather than take your car to the body shop, learn to make your garage your own personal body shop. If you learn to do some of the easier car maintenance yourself, you can save some serious bucks. Most people can easily change windshield wipers, spark plugs, or lights themselves. Read up, do research, and talk to friends to get help, and keep a little extra money in your wallet.

Support The Students: Visit your local trade school or technical college for discounted auto repair and body shop services. While the maintenance may take longer, the students will also be supervised by teachers, so the work is likely to be high-quality.

Friendliness: Butter-up your local mechanic. If you become a friend and loyal patron of your local and trusted body shop, you are more likely to get discounts. Use flattery, baked goods, and always go to the same body shop. Quality business know customer service goes a long way, so make them want to return the kindness.

There are many ways to save on body shop work so you aren't constantly putting money into your car. Do research and talk to people you know to find other ways they are saving. If you put in the time, it is likely to pay off in the end.
