Because cars are made of metal, the natural tendency for the body of a car is to rust. The natural exposure of the metal of a car to oxygen and water causes a process that results in rust. There are many steps you can take to preserve the quality of your car and ensure your car does not become riddled with rust. Take your car to your local or trusted body shop to have them help you with these anti-rust techniques, or you can perform this body shop work at home.
Applying rust proofer to the body of your car is the first, most obvious step in preventing rust. Even application is essential, because any patch that has not been treated is prone to rust. While this step may be cheaper to do at home, a professional at a body shop is most likely trained to apply the rust proofer properly.
When you car is made, the paint applied to the body of the car will usually have a rust proofer in it. Paint protects the metal from exposure to water and oxygen, so it is in your best interest to keep your car's paint in excellent condition. For small jobs, keep a pot of touch-up paint nearby and coverup small dings and nicks in the paint immediately. For bigger scratches, take your car to the body shop for repair and treatment to avoid rust.
The last step is the easiest. Keep your car clean and dry. During the long winter months, salt water can accumulate and dry on your car, increasing your chances of rust. Keep your car in good condition and take care of it. If you have any concerns, take your car to the body shop, and they can help you.
