Tips to Avoid Getting Ripped Off by Your Mechanic

Going to a body shop can be intimidating, especially if you don't know much about cars. You hear horror stories of mechanics doing more damage to a car than when it was brought it or of people receiving bills for thousands of dollars for work they didn't need on their car. Don't let your fear paralyze you; be confident and follow these tips to ensure you are getting your money's worth when you take your car to the body shop.

Ask for a detailed estimate first-- in writing. Make sure the mechanic knows you do not agree to any work being done before you agree to it, and have that written with the estimate. Also, make sure you understand everything on the estimate. Just because they've written down the intended repair doesn't mean it's necessary. Make them explain it to you-- you're paying them, after all.

Getting an estimate at a body shop is not a contract. If the prices seem high, or the suggested repairs seem extensive, tell them you need to think about it, and get a quote at another body shop. This will give a better idea if the work and the price is legitimate.

Pay attention to your car's manual. Some preventative maintenance (like when to change plugs) will be detailed in your owner's manual. If the body shop is insisting on frequent, unnecessary changes and maintenance, your manual can clue you into this.

Never pay for a repair if you don't understand it. Just like with an estimate, make the body shop mechanic explain everything you are paying for. If possible, pay with a credit card so if the repairs turn out to be fraudulent, you can dispute the charge.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. This is your car and your money, so you deserve to know what's going on. Speak up and be confident, and if you feel like you are dealing with dishonest mechanics, take your car to another body shop.
